General Marine/Spec-Ops Discussion - Katamari
The Special Forces of Operation Pitchfork

We don't know much about how the war will go. But we know there will be some kind of main battlefield, with all of the ecosystems that implies. There will be scouts, transports, fighters...everything.

However, all these different kinds of units will also be needed away from the main battlefield, for Special Ops type missions. As opposed to the main battlefield, there will probably be little in the way of combat support for any SpecOps teams. So they will usually require small independent teams composed of members with various skill sets to cover all combat and support roles involved.

Basically, these small "Task Forces" will need to be able to:
- Scout
- Self-select missions
- Select appropriate targets of opportunity
- Support themselves

That means we will need all kinds of ships: scouts, transports, fighters, bombers.

Obviously groups will all be different, and therefore serve many purposes, dependent on their mission orientation. It will be up to each group to decide what missions they want to pursue. This will effect the size of their team, ship requirements, and operational range.

We could have dedicated scout teams, bombing teams, sleeping units deep in enemy territory.. Or groups who will do it all, from scouting to actually carrying out attacks!

If you are interested, you can register your group, or as looking for a group if you are alone!
Don't forget to list your ships and roles!

Of course lone wolfs are welcome, but it will be tough out there, so think about joining a team!

The first step will be to start organizing teams; we will talk again about strategy and more detailed organization as we learn more!!

So enlist now if your are interested, and let us know what you think!

Considering the lax hierarchy in this operation and the instancing, the special forces idea (while interesting) would be kinda hard to bring into life.

You'll most likely have very talented people in tight groups working together... now, ordering those people around to do this or that... I don't know. My interpretation from what most of the mods and Sailor have said is that while we we'll be working together towards the same objective, everyone will try to accomplish it on it's own way...

Hell, not even sure if the entire Op will abide to one plan or another at this point...
It's a penguin... with a gun. I'd run if I were you.

I flew with a Special Forces style unit in another game, and it is a significant force multiplier. But it takes a lot of seriousness, dedication and training while the vast majority of people just want to play a more relaxed game and are not willing to invest in that level of teamwork and obedience to combat doctrine.

Such ones would probably work best as independent specialists within the command structure and have preselected mission profiles and targets to focus on. Such as clear out Orbital Weapons Platforms, or engage Destroyer escorts while everyone else concentrates on the Carrier.

You're both making good points :) I knew it wasn't the idea that would solve all problems  :)

I guess we'll see how it goes :)  We are going to use many tactics along the line anyway :)

Can't wait  ;D

Can I get you to do a rewrite on the OP, Turban, and make this a sign up list for anyone offering SpecOp teams for the Operation? I'm sure out of this huge pile of people, we'll have a few A-Teams that might want central command to know they're available. If we do get people coming here volunteering teams, I'll need you to keep the OP updated reflecting what we've got available in the way of teams.

We'll have all the DFM, Alpha, and most of Beta for these teams to practice should they form. If they're good enough for the role, we'll determine at a later date.

No, you're not too late. I've been having a busy week myself. Next week is looking kind busy as well, so I should be in and out intermittently. But thanks, I'm glad to know you're up for it.

Hey, Turban, I didn't know if you were still up for making this a sign up list for Special Force teams still.

If you are, can you check out the Recon/Scout thread to see an example of the sign up sheet? I think that's how we might want to do it.

Also, there was some talk about special force actions on the thread that gave me an idea. For our Special Force teams, I wonder if we can get them into ships, then get them situated in Vanduul space ahead of time. Then the crews go to sleep, and when the time comes, they all activate at the same time. Kind of like paratroopers. That could be the role of the Special Forces in OPPF.

It would be a nice idea, I would love to participate in, and I think you can coordinate with the Recon squads to see if they also want to be part of a recon/spec ops kinda squad, I would love to do both, also a lot of training will be required to make it into the squads, well hope you do the sign up list soon, see you in the 'verse
Logan out

That's actually an awesome idea there Ben. It would require our troops to be patient and sit offline for a while but if they were up for it, it could be a great way to ambush convoys.

Ok, Turban! Take your time, I know it's been hectic on your end lately. We just need to shake out a structure for the Special Forces concept, post a sign up list, and modify the first post to be an introductory post to the Special Forces thread much the same way the Scout/Recon thread is.

Thanks Turban!

Lol. Yes, we have a name. NMC stands for No More Crap. Because we don't take Drama from anyone ;)
But as a Spec Ops fighter formation, we're widely known on our server as a Ratpack.

We'll have more members coming in from other games once we've got them rounded up. And my wingmates will have much better ships too. They just want to get their feet wet with not much expense until they can see what their paying for. But more importantly than ships or gear, most of us have between 1.5-3 years of experience working together as an integrated space combat wing. It is my hope to bring that experience to the table.

Would the Spec Forces be intrested in linking with OP blackout to target the enemy comms ships?

That sounds like the sort of mission profile Special Forces is all about. Going after specific targets rather mixing it up in the general melee.

It will require much more manpower, and that is not easy to find as working together as a tightly integrated team is needed during most difficult missions. For example, we have only 1 Tali listed with which to bombard large targets or lay in missile support. The rest are lightweight fighters.

Also, before I forget. I just looked at the volunteer spreadsheet. Those looking for a group may PM me and any other group that is willing to work with those outside their own organization.

Perhaps there should be added columns for preferred time zone, spoken language, which VoIP service is used, and a few other factors that contribute to a good team dynamic so that volunteers can find where they would fit in best.

Then welcome aboard! It will be good to have you along for the ride.

You can add yourself to the list in the spreadsheet up at the top of this thread, and designate yourself as "Looking for Group" if you wish. I would suggest looking up the listed Orgs in the spreadsheet on the RSI site to get a feel for where you would think you may work with established teams the best as they are added, or start your own independent strike group if that is your desire.

Redback Company posted saying they were interested, and would be looking in on this thread/worksheet when his/her computer was fixed.

Allied eXecutive Endeavors (AXE) has signed up on the worksheet, and may be willing to work with partners outside their Org. But we will have to contact them about that as I can't speak for their group.

NMC has no problem working with independent partners or those belonging to other Orgs, and not all of us have signed into our SC Org yet. I can say that due to insider information.

I only listed what I've seen so far, with a neutral stance toward Org recruitment as this is a Special Forces recruitment thread. Anyways, the choices are up to you and anyone else looking for a group to fly alongside with during PF missions.

I'm rather interested in this sort of pre-Pitchfork activity.

For scouting duty, I only got a 315p, but consider that it is fitted out to be an explorer, so deep recon it is.

Other then that, most the ships I got is multi-crew ships and I'm going to need a few good friends with me while we are conducting raids. On the bright side, I got a lot of firepower to bring.

Regarding time zones: I work night on a shift basis, so it will be a strange mix of nearly no activity to 7 days of pure gaming. At that point I'll be available pretty much 24/7.

That is about everything I got to offer. So if anyone is interested in working with me, just give me a note.

If we are to have special forces it would be best to make sure that the ships involved are fast, so they can leave the area immediately once they have completed their tasks.

Having bombers in this task force sounds good at first, but as of now we only have two types of bombers, one bomber which is carrier based and due to which will require an idris or larger (easy for the vanduul to detect), or the retaliator, which although it isn't carrier based, it is still large and has a lot of weapons and will therefore have a high signature.

As for your idea of having transports for your special forces, it depends on what you had in mind for your transport ship, as they will have to be fast, perhaps using a group of avengers would best suit this role.

Since the ghost hornet is carrier based, we would have to use a different ship that is modified for recon missions.
