We could post them here and have them sent off as a collection. Or not. Could post them as a check and advice column sort of thing too. That way we can also check what has already been done. Can't have 90% of people saying they lost their sister on Orion. Could help vary things a bit because people like to be original too.

Just a thought.

In my opinion, citizen letters should be personal. For all the flaws and merit that has.
Unlike the open letter that is being drafted, the personal ones should have flaws and either a formal or informal tone depending on personal preference. So I don't think people should feel the need to post them here or have people make draft for them in the first place since it will lose the personal touch.

I feel this would be the best approach to the personal letters. We can start a thread for them so people can say when they've sent one off, but they don't have to say what the contents were if they don't want to.

I will start one, but no one is obligated to post there.

Ok, so I think we have enough consensus here to agree that we should hold off on the Open Letter. I'm thinking sometime in January. Anyone see any dates in January, sometime mid-to-late, that may be a date we'd want to aim for for any specific reason?

January 14th

Anniversary of Vanduul attack on Boro. (185 years)

Couldn't be more convenient.

Sounds perfect. We'll have it sent to arrive by January 14th.

There is a the possibility that I can drive it to the LA offices, since I'm planning on visiting a friend near there after the holiday season anyways. That will make sure it will arrive on the right day and the shipping cost for anything we want to include will be minimum, since we can have it all come to my place, gather it together, and then drive it there instead of shipping it again.

I have to double check with my friend though, and see if the dates are good. But if not, we can figure out how to get it to them by then, since we've got time.

This is going to be crunch week for the letter! Roll out your dead! And you letter alterations! But mostly just the letters. Any changes you want to make, make them this week. We've got to get it ready for the proper date.

It looks like I won't be able to drive down to Cali after all to visit my friends, since my next couple of weeks are going to be terribly busy with VA appointments, and other junk. That means we'll have to time it through the mail. I was working on getting the physical seal done here where I live, since I found out I have some friends who have equipment that can do that sort of stuff. Maybe. It depends on how busy the Air Force is. As of right now, I'm going to be using the OPPF Crest for the wax seal and header of the physical letter. If anyone has anything to say, this is the week to do it.

[DATE HERE]

Earth - Sol System
Imperial Senate Hall
Honorable High-Secretary Sharrad

Mr. High-Secretary,

We send you this letter today, on the day of the anniversary of the Vanduul attack on Boro 185 years ago, in order to ask the United Empire of Earth for its endorsement and support for what has widely become known as "Operation Pitchfork." We, the men and women who have rallied to its cause, request you present this letter and its contents to the Senate for its consideration.

It is not as beggars that we come to you, but as loyal sons and daughters of humanity, from all walks of life. We will not ask the Empire to hold our hands. However, while our task is great, our resources are limited. The United Empire of Earth, in its role as both home of and protector, could advance our efforts by leaps and bounds. What we strive to accomplish in months, the Senate could manage in a day's session. From temporarily waiving docking fees to directly subsidizing fuel and armaments for our operations.

However, we ask for more than simply economic support.

Preferred jump-point and transit rights for our pilots and supporters. Access to military intelligence in the Orion and Tiber sectors. A call for volunteers on the Navy's ranks. A limited and temporary pardon to members of Operation Pitchfork who have previously operated on the far side of the law while they support the operation. There are a myriad of ways in which Imperial aid for our cause could help save lives, all of which would require minimal effort and expenditure on your part.

We shall not falter, though we fly into unknown and uncharted space against a deadly foe. What we will aim to accomplish has never been attempted before. They do not expect us, they have not prepared for us, they cannot will not stop us. We shall bring the battle to them where they are strongest reside, where we will prove - once and for all - that humanity is not to be preyed upon. That humanity will fight back. That humanity will prevail.

Know that this rally is not - and will not - be tainted by Operation Pitchfork is not meant - nor will it be - an endeavor for any personal or corporate interests. What we aim to accomplish is not meant to enrich or glorify any one group or individual, but for all of humanity as a whole. We act today because no one else before us has, and we fight now so that no one else after us is forced to. Whatever the result of this endeavor, the men and women who have joined together for this righteous cause have only one thing in their minds: The future and well-being of the entire human race.

While we wish that you will would grant us your help assistance, know that we are many, and we are adamant in our resolve. Operation Pitchfork will come to be, with or without Imperial sanction. Far too long have we endured the Vanduul onslaught. Far too long have we allowed those wretched leeches to gorge themselves on the lives of our innocent and brave.

No further longer.

The Men and Women of Operation Pitchfork.

I like most of your corrections Benjamin.

Couple things I'd change:

1) "We send you this letter today, on the day of the anniversary of the Vanduul attack on Boro 185 years ago (...)"

I don't know, doesn't ring well with me... perhaps a more simplified version? Something like: "on the anniversary of the tragedy of Boro". I'm not sure, I just get an iffy feeling about that construction... In any case, I think that if we are going to keep it we should write down the number.

2) "It is not as beggars that we come to you, but as loyal sons and daughters of humanity, from all walks of life. We will not ask the Empire to hold our hands. However, while Our task is great, but our resources are limited. The United Empire of Earth, in its role as both home of and protector, could advance our efforts by leaps and bounds. What we strive to accomplish in months, the Senate could manage in a day's session. From temporarily waiving docking fees to directly subsidizing fuel and armaments for our operations."

So we don't repeat "however" too much.

3) "A limited and temporary pardon to members of Operation Pitchfork who have previously operated on the far side of the law while they support the operation. "

While I understand that this is one of our major objectives, I still hold true to a more "implied" way of requesting this so as not to force the Senate to openly condone criminals... Asking them so directly puts them in a tough spot from which most ways out lead to a decision against us.

4) "Operation Pitchfork is not meant - nor will it be - an endeavor for any personal or corporate interests."

Is that grammatically correct? Shouldn't it be "... is not meant as - nor will it be - an endeavor..." I'm not native so I'm probably nitpicking, but might as well ask.

Overall, I like it. Nice job.

Well, I found out the wax we got for the letter is the wrong type. It won't survive the trip through the mail. The proper kind to use is not accessible to me right now except for ordering it through the mail. Which, by the time it gets here, it will be too late to get it to them by the 14th. We can send them a digital letter so it gets there by the proper day, and follow up with the physical letter, postdate the letter, or we can move it to a different date. Or wait a year. Which would more likely than not actually be about when we'd launch the event. Sorry I let you guys down. I should have double checked what kind of wax it was I had.

As to your suggestions, Deathcall, I think you're right about 1. It did feel shoehorned in a tad. Dropping "the day" cleans it up quite a bit more. But I think the number of years ago its been is important to reflect on how long this has been a problem.

For two, I still don't think we should have the line "We will not ask the Empire to hold our hands." in it, as it seems more confrontational than it needs to be. But I do like some of the suggested changes. We do need that "are" in there though. And instead of "but" we should change it to "and"

For 3, we NEED to ask for it, as uncomfortable as it may be for some people. We won't get it if we don't implicitly ask for it, and we need to tell our pirate and smuggler members that we tried, even if we don't get it. If we tiptoe around the topic, the UEE can quite easily ignore it.

You're correct about 4. Rewriting that section turned into a mess, and I knew I was going to forget something somewhere.

A few more suggestions:

1) "We send you this letter today, on the day of the anniversary of the Vanduul attack on Boro 185 years ago in order to ask the United Empire of Earth for its endorsement and support for what has widely become known as "Operation Pitchfork." We, the men and women who have rallied to its cause, request you present this letter and its contents to the Senate for its consideration."

Still doesn't sound right. How about:

"We send you this letter today, on the 185th anniversary of the Massacre of Boro, to ask the United Empire of Earth for it's endorsement (...)"

2) "It is not as beggars that we come to you, but as loyal sons and daughters of humanity, from all walks of life. However, while our task is great, and our resources are limited. The United Empire of Earth, in its role as both home of and protector of humanity, could advance our efforts by leaps and bounds. What we strive to accomplish in months, the Senate could manage in a day's session. From temporarily waiving docking fees to directly subsidizing fuel and armaments for our operations.

However, we ask for more than simply economic support."

Now I made a mistake on my last post. I don't think made my suggestion clear enough. The problem I had with this section was the repetition of the word "however" which I've put in bold letters here.

This can be easily solved by simply deleting the first "however" so there's no repetition.

3) Well, I still hold true to the more implied way of asking the UEE to leave our shadier members alone... The implications of publicly condoning their crimes are a political disaster and could even affect how the general public sees our Operation (lore-wise). Also, the logistical complications could be mind boggling both in-lore and out of it... We need to come up with a more subtle or convincing way to ask for this.

4) More of a suggestion than a correction... should we pin a certain song to the letter and ask them to read it with that song in the background? And please, not that crappy tune they use in movies every time the president gives out a motivational speech...

Sorry. This hadn't shown up as updated with any comments when I was clicking on the "Show unread posts since last visit" for some reason.

I was trying to get a consensus on what to do because I had gotten the wrong wax for the seal, and didn't know if I should send it without it or not. There was the possibility we could hold off until next year, since this probably won't have happened yet as of Jan 2015. Or we could move it to another historically significant day concerning Orion and/or the Vanduul.

My friend with the seal has been sent to Los Vegas for Red Flag, so he's not going to be back for a little while. Worse comes to worse, I'll just order the damn $100 seal myself to replace it and be done with it.

Or got in a fight with a Vanduul Raider party?

Also, screw the seal... not worth the money and might as well just send a digital version of the letter... which makes more sense from a lore POV. I think Haddock said paper is no longer used...

But well.

Ok, so I'm going to Mancherster, England in a couple of weeks. This works out, because I'm going to be hanging out with some people just north of the Foundry 42 offices, so I can totally take it to them when I'm there. I can always role-play it taking a month to get from the outer systems to Earth. :D

I'm going to go get a nice envelope for it, and get it printed out on nice paper.

Hah, brilliant! Love the initiative on this one! I wish I could be there when you deliver it. ;-) Then again, I could deliver a copy to Santa Monica... But I dunno, haha, I'd be embarrassed. And it'd depend on the date.

So does this letter mean we're laying off the "we're doing this because the UEE failed us and abandoned our brethren" angle?

No, we're still going to play that up where it suits us. We did a little bit in the letter to the UEE, it's just a lot more politely stated.

If you can get the letter to the Santa Monica office about the same day I get mine to the Manchester office, that'd be pretty cool. I'm landing in Manchester on the 15th, I think, so I won't have it to them until the 17th, which is just shy of a month after it was supposedly "sent." Makes for a more authentic role play, I think.

Re: Open OPPF Letter to the UEE

Sounds good Benjamin. Btw, can you post a version of the letter you are going to deliver?

On other thoughts... we could post some related fiction on the same date, try to get some momentum going... But that would require said fiction to be written, lol.

EDIT:

Actually, even if we could role-play our way out of the date problem... I'm not sure is worth it. It's not like it affects the letter a lot... we can just change that line.

After all, the delivery of this letter could become it's own entry in the Starcitizen timeline...

Well... my car just got rear-ended today. I don't think there's much structural damage, insurance should take care of it, and a shop I can get it repaired at is just down the street. Pretty sure I will have it taken care of by then, but if not, driving on the 405 with my lights in that condition is probably a big invitation for a ticket. So if my car's not repaired by then, I might have to bow out. If not, though... do you mind if I bring the Santa Monica guys some grub with the letter? ;-) I was actually planning on bringing something by for them before all this, anyway.

Greetings,

I am currently on a mission for a citizen movement referring to itself as Operation Pitchfork. I've been tasked with delivering a letter to the UEE leadership, and will be arriving in Manchester, England on the 14th of February after much traveling. I was wondering if I would be allowed to hand deliver this letter to the folk working at Foundry 42, and if I could get a valid office address so I could deliver this letter sometime after my arrive.

Much appreciation for your time,
-Benjamin the Rogue

We had another couple of messages about the dates I would be in town, and I just got this reply.

Hi Benjamin,

I don't believe they'll be ready by that time, so you might have to send it with another courier!

Best,

So we may need another person to bring the letter in. I might swing by their office anyways, and drop it in their mailbox, seeing as I can't get in to give it to anyone.
