Economic Impact - Societal Responsibility
Hi again!

Just wanted to get some thoughts on how we expect OPPF to affect the dynamic economy. And whether or not that impact might warrant some attention.

  • Are we expecting a server reset after Beta closes?
  • Should we expect supply and demand issues for the 1000+ hornets, 300's, and auroras that will likely be destroyed and need replacement?
  • Should we expect prices for these ships to sky rocket afterwards?
  • Do we care what that means for new players after release?

Thoughts?

1) Such a wipe has not been scheduled on any roadmap. All indications (getting persistence up and running) show CIGs intention of quite the opposite. We don't expect a server wipe unless the Op's stress testing reveals horrific game breaking malfunctions or data loss due to catastrophic server glitches that require such a wipe. This is highly unlikely, but if there is something that is made known to CIG  and a wipe is the only option to repair something they overlooked then we have done them and the community a favor of highlighting it before SC's full and public release.

2) If you are taking about ship insurance replacements (spawning in your hangar or elsewhere) it may be possible on a local level. In fact it may be likely. But these replacements cost nothing but perhaps time for that ship to be replaced. However players on the other side of the Empire probably will not be effected since objects also need to be transported to their locations (replacement respawns have not been discussed) and those distant storage pools will not dry up like local ones would. So most likely the NPC factories would simply expand production, consumption, and end up routing more replacements to the front than normal.

If we make plans and prepare beforehand, there should not be much in the way of economic disruption. In fact it may start an economic boom for players to take advantage of. Prices for weapons and brand new ships (not insurance replacements) may indeed go up, but the prices for raw materials and components to make those items would go up as well. So there is also an opportunity for economic growth. We like to joke that OPPF will put the insurance companies out of business, but realistically there will be 20,000,000 npcs running around vs thousands, tens of thousands or even a few hundred thousand players participating in OPPF. That is a lot of economy to soak up any uptick in losses or supply/demand imbalance. Remember Rule of Acquisition #34. War is good for business. But really any effect will be temporary regardless of what that effect is.

3) No. It is a big universe that is being simulated and it is being structured so that players cannot break it regardless of what they do. Any uptick will be temporary and local, then level back down to normal, and any effect will be buffered by the millions of NPCs going about their day and having their own impact on the economy. CIG game masters can also make adjustments as necessary.

4)Yes. Part of stress testing is finding out if things break and fix them before the public gets involved. However there will be no real long-term player-driven impact on the UEE economy for various reasons, some reasons already mentioned. CIG will ensure that new players are not negatively impacted. Some have said at the end of beta that there will be some down time after beta to let the game universe spin up properly and generate a stable economic universe, but I can't confirm this. But regardless of the steps taken, CIG is also expecting OPPF to happen and will be keeping an eye on things so the universe doesn't collapse on itself. After all, their goal for their creation is that players can't break the universe. If we do break it, then something slipped past CIG and needed that brought to their attention so they can fix it before public release.

Here's one: If we trigger a wipe and they resume Beta to test the fix, do we Rinse & Repeat? :)

Good question. Hard to say what morale will be like if that happens and how many will be in with us to go through it all a second time if that ends up being the case. Might actually be a good idea to be prepared for that scenario.

Depends on if we are talking about a full wipe or a rollback. A rollback means we still have the stuff we started out with (preparation & stockpiling) while a full wipe means we have our backer based assets and that's all.

It's pretty clear what wipe means. IF we only have a simple rollback I am sure most will stay on board and have some more fun blasting through duul as an extended fight. An actual wipe would likely mean months of work again re-doing everything we had done and possibly re-planning some things depending on what may change from it if they decide to implement extra things in the process or change anything.

I'm in either way if schedule cooperates. :)
