Topic: Ranks and Badges (Read 4129 times) previous topic - next topic

Ranks and Badges
Adjusted things slightly. Also want to keep the middle structure free for expansion - we don't know what we'll be needing yet.

Right now it's

Cadets: New members who haven't been made into ensigns yet. Right now basically everyone who hasn't made a post.

Ensign: You get your pitchfork. Welcome aboard

Lieutenant: Someone who's made a contribution - doing artwork, active recruiting, wiki contributions, etc.

And of course Supreme Commander up top.

There's nothing special for getting the promotion except for the term and badge.

Comments welcome.

Speaking of the badges, feel free to submit a new set or sets for people to decide on. They can be up to 150 pixels wide. 24-bit pngs with transparency support are best.

I've set maximum avatar size to 150x150 as well.

Welp I guess that means I am the planning Lieutenant? lol

Or I am the voice that haunts Wingman's Hangar supposing we don't get any fellow video posters to step in?

Was because of being willing to put your voice out there, yes :-p

JackDaniels made a point regarding enlisted/noncommissioned ranks.

My initial figuring was that, since every single player can have multiple NPCs working under them, everyone could have command, but some people probably don't want command roles.

In that case we can decide on a rank structure for enlisted/specialist types. I'd still prefer to keep things fairly loose, however.

While I'm partial to naval ranks for commissioned ranks in space, I think the term 'spaceman' is rather lame, so my vote would be for an army structure - Private -> Corporal -> Sergeant.

While also leaving the officer positions to those that do most of the major planning/executions and Leaders of other organizations that join our cause.

Well I was thinking we could have a separate track for joint operation officers

So effective officer ranks here might go Ensign (Lone wolves) -> Lieutenant -> Commander -> Captain

Visiting ranks would be one step up from this, but not be given actual moderator capacity that may come with ranks of Captain or higher

So
(Visiting/Allied/Joint Operations/Insert term here) Lieutenant -> Commander -> Captain -> Commodore -> Insert flavors of Admiral and perhaps Marshal here

Do you want me to make some metallic badges for the ranks? I see we have a 150x150 Ensign badge. I was thinking of designing some that look similar to US Army designs

But obviously with a more space/pitchfork theme to them.

Think we should nail down a forum rank structure first, even if it isn't complete.

For the census app, I'm thinking of having it ask simple series' of multiple choice questions

Do you support Operation Pitchfork?

Yes/Neutral/Traitor

Are you a member of a (soon to be official) organization?

Yes, participating under my organization umbrella/Yes, here independently/No, lone wolf/No, want to be a part of Pitchfork organizing (Only available if supporting)

(If here independently/want to be a part of Pitchfork's structure) To you prefer to give orders and take advice, or give advice and take orders?

(If here, but participating under organization umbrella) Are you part of your organization's leadership structure?

A bit complex, but would give us a good rundown of how many crew/support people we have, and the resources they can provide, at a glance. It could also tell us roughly how much organizational control we actually have (and allow participating organizations to have an insight into theirs, if they wished).

Badges needed then
- New member (unknown, may be spammer)
-- Approved member (human)
--- Traitor
--- Bystander (for neutral people here independently or as lone wolves)
--- Ambassador (for neutral people representing their orgs)

--- Participating Lone Wolf
---- Probably a set of descriptions for ranks. Mercenary/Bounty Hunter/Freelancer if not feeling descriptive.

--- Participating as part of an org
---- Non-leaders would be pilots/crew or somesuch
---- Leaders would have a ranks according to their rough equivalent in pitchfork structure.

--- Participating independently
---- Army-style ranks for enlisted/specialists/ncos
---- Navy for commissioned leaders

Just my suggestions.

I'd have the software do most of the grunt work for this, of course.

I think we should shy away from the single-star motif. We're our own unit, not a branch of the UEE.

Actually the UEE use this design for their logo

The designs above are directly from the Star Citizen logo which represents the citizens. I personally think it fits well. Non of the UEE military branches use that symbol either.

The three I posted should do for now but if we plan to improve our rank structure then it'll require the collaboration of several minds to get a full list of ranks and their graphics completed.

We should get some feedback first if people want the ones I created as the ranks for now though.

This will go a long way to helping us identify at a glance what we've got going on for us.

My guild over at Skjaldborg have a ribbon and ranking system that's pretty convenient. Having one here would be nice too, especially for people who are here representing other organizations.

Yep, what Ben said. Things look good so far. When the group gets bigger, it'll help the newcomers figure out who's in charge without too much trouble.

I don't know. It seems overly complicated for a mostly voluntary movement. We, the unwashed rabble from the fringe systems, have little regard for fancy titles :P.

Does anyone knows how ranks and titles were handled on popular movements? It might serve as a better inspiration.

Well, the Red Army tried to do away with ranks ("Red Soldier"). It lasted about two years

Admiralty here is probably going to be a rotating title - people take command for periods of time in certain campaigns, and take lesser roles in others.

I do agree with this. But we should have, maybe not ribbons and ranks, but quick identifies for people representing guilds or points of contact for certain roles or activities.

I like Xeriar's proposed rank insignia. the one modification I would suggest would be removing the laurel from the Ensign insignia. It looks too similar to the Lieutenant insignia at the moment. Either that or more noticeably differentiate the colour difference between them.

Rank/responsibility wise, I propose that we give the leaders a chosen rank but they only have full command authority within their own area of the operation.  If they took part in another area of engagement they would maintain their rank but slot into the chain of command wherever needed. So we could end up with a Captain (respectfully) giving orders to an Admiral.

**Edit: Apparently I didn't read the post above mine!  Good to know I'm not alone either way.

Just a suggestion that could boil down to personal preference, but would you consider leaving the laurel trim out of the lower ranks?  I think identifying the insignia via an increased level of detail (such as adding stars or tiny ship silhouettes) would help them stand out as well as appear more polished.

I might have to try my hand at creating some, if I can find some spare time to remember how GIMP works.

For the ranks proper on the forums here, it's probably going to stick with

New Member -> Enrolled (approved) -> Contributor -> Subscriber (when this site starts being a drain on resource. Isn't yet, but slowly getting there) -> Training Wheel Mod (may rename, but right now it fits >_>), Technician (currently only myself), Supreme Commander (Sailor), and Administrator (I keep separate passwords for accounts that can seriously damage things, so...)

Can you expand on the roles of each rank after Enrolled?

Re: Ranks and Badges

Contributor is someone who has done something for the project.
- So everyone who has done art has it
- Everyone who works on the wiki has it
- Probably include other things, also. It's just a shiny for people who have done stuff. May include stuff like linking to us in your RSI sig, as well as in forum posts, etc, high referrer counts, etc.

Subscriber is just a thought at the moment, but if/when this place gets about 20-50 times as active as it is now, it's going to be a significant drain on server resources - so I'm going to need some help. The server we're on now costs me near $200 a month. Is not cheap : /

Neither of the above will have any official position within the organization, per se.

Moderators are all people with Sailor's active blessing to manage things here. Stuff is a bit jumbled at the moment, but you'll see more come together over time.

Me being a technician - I prefer to stay back from the social management/leadership roles, and let others handle that while I deal with what I enjoy. The Administrator account is something I log into when something needs fixing, generally. Or when I'm testing stuff.

Sailor67 is the Supreme Leader because he's the founder of this operation, and his word is final. Sometime during the Alpha we're going to have to coalesce into a final stratagem, etc.

Isn't that going to cause a little confusion on what we are about? oo hell when have we ever conformed to anything Kerbal it up... Dairy Queen it up... and for the added feature then Sid Mier's Pirate it up too... out to avenge the EVIL SPANISH BARON THAT STOLE OUR FAMILIES LEGACY FROM ME.  :P

now thinking about that having a Kerbal riding the Pitchfork would look funny for the image!

Poor Bob.... ROFL so that makes me wonder as Moderator's does that make us the same as Kerbal Test phases? THE SUPER CRASHY-McSPLODY SHIP OF NOTHING BUT ROCKET FUEL AND one engine!

Personally I am hoping we can get some individual tags for those that are leaders for their own groups. But, I guess with the fact that they can make up their own titles it shouldn't be to hard for others to check the profile to see that...
