Scanner Software upgrade

So is anyone else a little disappointed about the scanner software upgrade? I was hoping for something that would enhance the scanners in combat or exploration. An upgrade to mining ships is more than a little disappointing. The vast majority of the players don't even HAVE a mining ship. :( I hope it's something we can save and apply to a ship later in the game and not something that's automatically applied to only the ships we have when Beta is launched.
